What, for you, is the purpose of spirituality or religion?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for August 17, 2007:

Hanshan
Tis the exploration of the individual amidst humanity. An ambiguous convergence of the journey and the destination. It is the longing for resolution, the cultivation of potential, and the promise of permanence, in our transient moments of our unforgiving present.

It should come with a warning label. "Warning this is a potent social adhesive, which applied in the wrong manner can tear humanity apart; glue is not an opiate."

: )  I am glad you caught it. I didn't want it to be too obvert.
equating religion with glue is fine…
but glue sniffing? definite no no…

… As for my reference to Marx's oft-quoted “Religion is the Opium of the people”?…

I mean not to offend as it is tongue in cheek, and his quote could be applied to any belief system. If anything, the most  influential (and most damaging) “religion” of the past century was Marxism ala Stalin and Mao. If Marx found out he would be rolling in his grave.

Belief systems are powerful and for the most part beneficial social constructs, they have the potential to inspire, unite, motivate, and mobilize people to engage in extraordinary individual and collective feats. This said we should never allow anything of our own design to roll over our better nature in pursuit of a collective goal. I have faith in the resilience of the individual and her/his agency.

can be applied to any belief system in the end if were not careful.

Poor Marx, he would be rolling over in his grave if he finds out how tyrants branded his name
